Topic: We will cover some of the main trends in “continental” philosophy, including phenomenology, existentialism, and post-structuralism. Readings will be taken from five major philosophers of the period: Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980), Michel Foucault (1926-1984), and Jacques Derrida (1930-2004).

Weeks 1-2 Husserl, I, III, IV, VI, XI.20, XI.21

Weeks 3-4 Heidegger, I, II, III, VII

Weeks 5-6 Sartre, III, (Intro., 3., Conclusion), II, I (second and third selections)

Weeks 7-8 Foucault, What is Enlightenment?, Truth and Power, The Body of the Condemned, Right of Death & Power Over Life, On the Genealogy of Ethics (“From the Classical Self to the Modern Subject”), Politics and Ethics: An Interview, Polemics, Politics & Problemizations

Final Examination: Saturday, March 18, 8:00 A.M.

Assignments: Students will be expected to keep up with the reading. Read each assignment at least once before it is discussed in class, then read it again after the class discussion. There will be two papers of approximately 5 pages, to be assigned around the fourth and eighth weeks of the quarter. Each will be valued 30% of the grade. An in-class final examination will account for the other 40%. Papers not turned in on the due date will be penalized one fraction of a grade for each two working days late. All work must be completed in order for the course to be passed. A grade of Incomplete will be assigned only if requested in advance by the student.
